Below is a text with the same story that is told from three different points of view. Read each version and do the following tasks.
I followed my son through the door of our house after a long day of work.
“Uh, Dad, we have a problem here,” said my son. As I came into the kitchen, I saw that everything that had been on the table was now on the floor! So much for relaxing after work!
How did this even happen?
When the humans left for the day, I noticed the smell of peanut butter toast in the kitchen. Dogs can’t resist peanut butter. When we smell it, we just have to eat it! So I tugged the tablecloth to knock the toast off the table. Suddenly, the mail, books, and empty cups and plates all fell to the floor. Some cups and plates broke into very little pieces! I gobbled the toast and then hid under the bed.
I’m starting to think our house is haunted. When I came home with my dad today, it was like a ghost had thrown everything from the table onto the floor. I wonder if this has anything to do with the toast I left on the table this morning.

INTEGRATED LISTENING AND READING
Frank and Laura are a brother and sister from New York. Together with their father they are visiting Moscow. Among other sites, they are going to see some metro stations.
Task 1
Read the texts about six metro stations in Moscow and answer the questions after them.
Mayakovskaya Station (Green Line). This Art Deco masterpiece was opened on 11 September 1938, eight years after the death of the famous poet Vladimir Mayakovsky. Architect Alexey Dushkin designed the station, while artist Alexander Deyneka created 34 beautiful ceiling mosaics based on the theme “24-Hour Soviet Sky.” This station looks very modern and futuristic, and its full-size model won the Grand Prix at the 1939 New York World’s Fair.
Tsvetnoy Boulevard Station (Grey Line). Opened on 31 December 1988, this postmodernist station was designed by architects Vladimir Filippov and Rimidalv Pogrebnoi. The station was built near the famous circus at the request of its director Yury Nikulin, who wanted children to have a more convenient way to get to the circus. Inside, the colourful stained-glass panel created by artist Vladimir Kalensky depicts three well-known clowns, but they are not easy to spot — it is a kind of puzzle.
Ploshchad’ Revolutsii Station (Dark Blue Line). This station opened its doors on 13 March 1938 as a joint creation of architect Alexei Dushkin and sculptor Matvey Manizer. It is easy to recognize by its dark-red marble arches with 76 bronze life-size statues in the Socialist Realist style. The statues represent Soviet citizens such as farmers, athletes, soldiers and schoolchildren. Several figures have become good-luck charms; for example, touching the nose of the border guard’s dog is a famous ritual among students and tourists.
TsSKA Station (Turquoise Line). This modern station opened on 26 February 2018, created by a design group headed by architect Nikolai Shumakov. Elevated on high pedestals, there are four life-size bronze sculptures of famous Soviet and Russian athletes, created by artist Mikhail Pereyaslavets. These traditional monumental statues create a nice contrast with the modern minimalistic ceiling decorated with images of different sports.
Taganskaya Station (Circle Line). Opened on New Year’s Day in 1950, this station was designed by architects K. Ryzhkov and A. Medvedev to honour the Soviet armed forces. The station’s special artistic feature is its series of 48 triangular ceramic panels created by ceramicists E. Blinova, P. Kozhin and A. Sotnikov. These blue-and-white porcelain reliefs depict Soviet soldiers from different branches of the military surrounded by traditional floral motifs.
Komsomol’skaya Station (Circle Line). Opened on 30 January 1952, this station is a typical example of late Stalinist Baroque architecture, created by legendary architect Alexey Shchusev and decorated with grand mosaics by artist Pavel Korin. Known as an “underground palace,” this station greets passengers with an enormous bright yellow ceiling, grand chandeliers and eight large mosaics depicting famous Russian military leaders such as Alexander Nevsky, Dmitry Donskoy, Alexander Suvorov and others.

READING
Read the text below and do the following tasks.
The phrase “the Ides of March” sounds mysterious today, almost like the title of a forgotten legend. In ancient Rome, however, it was simply a date in the calendar — March 15th.
The Romans did not number days as we do now. Instead, each month was organized around three key markers: the Kalends (the 1st day), the Nones (the 5th or 7th day), and the Ides.
In March, May, July, and October, the Ides fell on the 15th day and the Nones on the 7th; in other months, they fell on the 13th and 5th days respectively.
Romans identified all the other days by calculating backward from the Kalends, Nones or Ides. They counted both the starting and ending days. For example:
April 17 — “ante diem XV Kalendas Maias” — 15 days before the Kalends of May
July 4 — “ante diem IV Nonas Julias” — 4 days before the Nones of July
October 10 — “ante diem VI Idus Octobres” — 6 days before the Ides of October
The word Ides comes from an old Roman term meaning “to divide.” For the Romans, it marked the middle of the month and was often associated with the full moon. The Roman year originally had only ten months and began in March, and so the Ides of March was the first full moon of the new year. But over time, one particular date became unforgettable: the Ides of March in 44 BC.
On that day, Julius Caesar — one of the most powerful leaders in Roman history — was killed in the Senate. According to the ancient historians Suetonius and Plutarch, Caesar had been told by a fortune teller that something bad would happen to him on the Ides of March. William Shakespeare (1564-1616) later made this moment famous in his play Julius Caesar, popularizing the phrase “Beware the Ides of March!” and turning the date into a symbol of fate, betrayal, and looming danger. Shakespeare based much of his play on Plutarch’s Lives of the Noble Grecians and Romans, which was translated into English by Thomas North in 1579.
So, there is a reason why the phrase “the Ides of March” sounds mysterious. We are not just talking about a date. We are remembering a sad moment in ancient history, and, at the back of our minds, thinking of Julius Caesar, William Shakespeare and the ancient historians Suetonius and Plutarch.
Задание 14. Can you think of a modern English word which sounds like / is connected with one of the ancient Roman words used for marking days of the month? Write one word in the box without any articles or punctuation marks.

READING
Read an article about the intricate songs of the small, leaping primates on an Indonesian island and do tasks 16—25.
‘Yoda’ primates sing duets like opera stars
Tiny, monkeylike creatures called tarsiers sing duets together in the style of opera singers — but those who fail to hit the high notes may also flop at attracting mates, scientists recently suggested.
With their large, pointed ears and expressive eyes, nocturnal tarsiers carry a striking resemblance to the diminutive Jedi master Yoda from «Star Wars» films. But while Yoda never demonstrated any operatic ability, tarsiers are energetic singers who may exert themselves vocally as a form of mating selection or to signal to each other that it’s time for all members of a troop to gather together to sleep, according to a new study.
To learn more about these vocal performances, scientists eavesdropped on tarsiers in Tangkoko National Park in Sulawesi, Indonesia in July and August 2018, and captured 50 recordings of 14 pairs of Gursky’s spectral tarsiers (Tarsius spectrumgurskyae) singing their morning duets. Researchers from Sam Ratulangi University in Sulawesi and Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, used machine learning to distinguish and classify notes and musical phrases in the tarsiers’ songs. Their findings, published Aug. 2 in the journal Frontiers in Ecology and Evolution, suggest that these performances are so taxing that not all tarsiers can hit the fast and high notes and duet proficiently.
Measuring just 3.5 to 6 inches (9 to 15 centimeters) tall and weighing no more than 7 ounces (200 grams), Gursky’s spectral tarsiers live only on Sulawesi, an Indonesian island east of Borneo. They were described as a separate species from other tarsiers in 2017 and are classified as vulnerable by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species. About 13 species of tarsiers inhabit islands in Southeast Asia.
The researchers captured the tarsiers’ duets using a handheld digital recorder and autonomous recording devices that were installed in the tarsiers’ jungle habitats. «Tarsiers are one of the easier duetting primates to record and study, at least in Tangkoko National Park, as they have small home ranges and seem to duet most mornings,” said senior study author Dena Clink, a researcher at Cornell’s K. Lisa Yang Center for Conservation Bioacoustics. «They are not afraid of humans, so we were able to get high-quality recordings relatively easily.”
When the scientists analyzed the intricate duets, which were performed between male and female tarsiers, they found that the performances resembled coloratura — a singing style that produces many notes very rapidly and that’s used by opera singers during arias to showcase their control and virtuosity.
“The duets exhibit acoustic trade-offs in note rate and note bandwidth — the range of frequencies within a note,» said Isabel Comella, lead study author and a researcher at the K. Lisa Yang Center. The tarsiers that sing more slowly do so with the widest range of frequencies within a note, while the tarsiers that repeat notes more quickly only appear capable of a narrower range of frequencies within a note, Comella told Live Science in an email. Only a minority manage both simultaneously. The authors hypothesize that rapidly singing notes containing a broad range of frequencies during a duet may be more physiologically and neurologically taxing for the singer, with only physically fit individuals able to do so.
Exactly why tarsiers duet in such a complex and physically taxing way is unknown, largely because the animals are rarely studied. Other primates are known to sing duets, including a type of lemur called the indri (Indri indri), titi monkeys in the Callicebus genus, and northern gray gibbons (Hylobates funereus), according to the authors. Prior studies into primate duets suggest that this behavior may be used for finding or guarding a mate, defending territory or strengthening social bonds, though further research is required to determine exactly why tarsiers are performing these duets, the study authors reported.
However, one possibility for the Sulawesi tarsiers is that their duetting could be linked to organization of their social groups. Tarsiers often forage alone at night for insects, and then reunite in the morning to sleep, and they may sing together at night “as a way to bring all group members to the same sleep tree,” a function that is not seen in other duetting primates, Comella said.
It could be a unique behavior to the tarsiers in Sulawesi, according to the authors. Tarsiers in the Philippines and Borneo are more solitary and don’t engage in duets as regularly.
Though Gursky’s spectral tarsiers sing their duets in the range of human hearing, the primates also vocalize in the ultrasonic range, which researchers are currently investigating. “We hope that with the advent of low-cost autonomous recording units and even smartphones we can start to learn more about the vocal behavior of tarsiers across Sulawesi,» Clink said.

Sure, this may not be the most (1) __________ (SCIENCE) analysis about mental health and screen time, but it’s never a bad idea to try limiting the amount of idle time wasted in front of a computer or smartphone. And while there are plenty of apps and devices promising to reduce your social media (2) __________ (CONSUME), their results are often (3) __________ (EVEN) and many require (4) __________ (COST) fees. Knowing this, a developer in Japan released a completely free Chrome browser (5) __________ (EXTEND) designed to throttle your doomscrolling. Their secret weapon is Cat Gatekeeper.
“You know that cat who always shows up right when you’re trying to work? We’ve (6) __________ (CREATE) that classic cat-owner experience in your browser,” the creators explain on its description page. “Let’s face it—humans are just (7) __________ (SERVE) to their cats. We are powerless against their charm… Let their (8) __________ (ADORE) heal you while you take a proper break.”

Cat Gatekeeper currently works with some of the most (0) POPULAR (POLARUP) timewasters like TikTok and VK. The timer is customizable, but its (1) __________ (FAULTED) setting allots a (generous) 60 minutes of social media frivolity. After overstepping your time limit, the screen is suddenly hijacked by a very hefty tabby who promptly plops down in front of your browser (2) __________ (OWNWID) for five minutes, preventing you from accessing your feed. After your respite, the (3) __________ (TAILIGD) feline presumably moves on to their next distraction, thus letting you return to posting. Pretty simple stuff.
However, there is some leeway to Cat Gatekeeper. The (4) __________ (MERIT) resets if you swap over to another website tab, and it’s exclusively designed for the preset social media (5) __________ (SALTPROMF). If that sounds like an easy way to (6) __________ TEACH the system—well, cats can’t do everything for us, can they?

Cat Gatekeeper looks trastworthy from a security standpaint, too. The free extension doesn’t feature ads, and promises that “no date is collected or transmitted externally.” An independent review on Reddit also provided Cat Gatekeeper’s source code, which only needs local storage permission to truck its own settings.
At any rate, it’s worth giving it a shoot. Cat Gatekeeper may not solve your social media dependancy, but it might at least force you to break up with a brief “cat nap,” so to speak.
Ответы можно записывать в любом порядке. В каждое поле ответа запишите только ОДНО слово. Слова с орфографическими ошибками, опечатками и лишними знаками не засчитываются!
